The team behind Web Summit hold technology conferences and events across the world — Web Summit, Collision and RISE — gathering the founders and CEOs of technology companies, fast-growing startups, policymakers and heads of state to ask a simple question: Where to next?
The Web Summit — one of the world's largest technology conferences, held over three days and hosting 1,000 speakers and over 42,000 attendees — needed a digital wayfinding, timetabling and information system to help people find their way around and get them where they needed to go. I worked on the design and creation of a digital signage system for the 2015 event at the RDS in Dublin. The system included 40 ceiling-mounted screens, multi-day schedule management, time-triggered events and the ability to make on-the-fly timetable changes. From creating the onscreen visuals, to managing the system during the event, I made it easier for attendees to find their way around the biggest tech conference in Europe.
As functionality is the ultimate purpose for wayfinding and directional signage programs, high contrast colours are used to help guide conference attendees where they need to go. Specific colours are used to indicate certain types of paths and destinations — green for exits, blue for facilities — to help with quick identification and to help lower cognitive load. Brand colours are also used on graphic elements to help extend the Web Summit brand and for visual consistency with print signage.
